The papers consist of correspondence to and from Waddell. Six of the letters are war time including a letter written on July 23, 1861, describing the Battle of Bull Run and three letters written in March, April and May, 1863 leading up to the seige of Vicksburg.

James Fleming Waddell was born in 1826 in Hillsboro, N.C. and came to Ala. as a young man. Waddell served as 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army in the Mexican War. In 1861 Waddell enlisted in the Confederate states Army as captain of a company in the 6th Ala. Infantry Regiment. Later he resigned his commission in the 6th to organize an artillery battery known as Waddell's Battery. He was later promoted to major and commanded a battalion of batteries.
